Port Richey is a small city with a big road running through it. US-19 carries commuters, snowbirds, delivery trucks and motorcycles through town every day, and Ridge Road feeds thousands more cars into that corridor. Where those two roads meet, people get hurt.

Conde-Huggins Accident Injury Lawyers is based right here. Our office at 6609 Ridge Road, Suite 4 sits between US-19 and Little Road, a few minutes from HCA Florida Bayonet Point Hospital. If you were injured in Port Richey, your lawyer is down the street, and if you cannot travel, we come to you. Call (240) 421-5511 for a free consultation.

Where crashes happen in Port Richey

Port Richey's layout concentrates risk on a handful of roads.

US-19. The stretch of US-19 through Pinellas and Pasco counties was named the deadliest road segment in Florida in a 2024 ConsumerAffairs study, with more than 150 deaths since 2020. A separate 2024 study of intersection crashes ranked Pasco County's intersections ninth deadliest in the country and named US-19 at Ridge Road and US-19 at Washington Street. Both are in or beside Port Richey. The road is wide, lined with driveways and strip centers, and crossed on foot by people who live on one side and shop on the other.

Ridge Road. Our own street. Ridge Road runs east from US-19 past our office, past the Port Richey Police Department, across Little Road and on toward Moon Lake Road. With the Ridge Road extension now reaching the Suncoast Parkway, the corridor carries far more east-west traffic than it was built for, and left turns in and out of the plazas are a steady source of T-bone and rear-end crashes.

The Cotee River area. The Pithlachascotee River, which everyone here calls the Cotee, runs through the original waterfront part of Port Richey. The streets near the river are narrow, slow and full of pedestrians, cyclists and golf carts headed for the waterfront. Low-speed crashes here still seriously hurt people on foot and on bikes.

Embassy Hills, Jasmine Estates and Bayonet Point. Most people who say they live in Port Richey actually live in the unincorporated neighborhoods that share the 34668 ZIP code. Jasmine Estates alone has more than 21,000 residents, and Embassy Hills is one of its largest subdivisions. These neighborhoods drain onto US-19, Ridge Road and Little Road through a few signalized exits, which means backups and drivers running stale yellows.

Pasco County's traffic death rate has run about 30 percent above the state average, according to Pasco MPO figures.

Who investigates your Port Richey crash, and why it matters

Port Richey is one of only four Pasco cities with its own police department. The Port Richey Police Department at 6333 Ridge Road responds to crashes inside the city limits. The city is small, though, and once you leave it or get on US-19, you are usually dealing with the Florida Highway Patrol, Troop C, or the Pasco Sheriff's Office.

This matters because the Pasco Sheriff's Office generally does not complete long-form crash reports; FHP does. A long-form report with a diagram, witness names and a narrative is far more useful in an injury claim than a short-form exchange of information. If a deputy wrote a short form, we gather what it leaves out: photographs, witness statements, 911 audio, nearby business camera footage and the vehicles themselves.

Not sure who investigated? Call (240) 421-5511. We will identify the agency, order the report and preserve the evidence while you focus on treatment.

The nearest hospitals

Serious trauma from a Port Richey crash goes to HCA Florida Bayonet Point Hospital, 14000 Fivay Road in Hudson, the only Level II trauma center in Pasco County and a few minutes north of our office. Less severe injuries are often treated at Morton Plant North Bay Hospital, 6600 Madison Street in New Port Richey.

Florida's no-fault law requires initial medical care within 14 days of the crash or your PIP benefits are lost. An emergency room visit the night of the crash satisfies that rule and creates the first record tying your injuries to the collision.

Florida law that applies to your Port Richey injury claim

The two-year deadline. Since HB 837 took effect on March 24, 2023, most negligence claims must be filed within two years of the injury (Fla. Stat. § 95.11(5)(a)). Wrongful death claims also carry a two-year limit (§ 95.11(5)(e)). Miss the deadline and the claim is gone, no matter how strong it was.

The 51 percent bar. Under Fla. Stat. § 768.81(6), if you are found more than 50 percent at fault for your own injuries, you recover nothing. If you are 50 percent or less at fault, your award is reduced by your share. Adjusters will try to pin fault on you, especially in US-19 lane-change and left-turn crashes. We investigate before they build that narrative.

PIP and the permanent-injury threshold. Your own PIP pays 80 percent of reasonable medical bills and 60 percent of lost income up to $10,000, regardless of fault, but only if you got care within 14 days. Unless a physician, PA or APRN finds an emergency medical condition, the medical benefit is capped at $2,500. To recover pain and suffering from the at-fault driver, Fla. Stat. § 627.737(2) requires a permanent injury, significant scarring, permanent loss of an important bodily function, or death.

UM/UIM coverage. Because Florida does not require bodily injury liability coverage on most private cars, many drivers on US-19 carry none. Your own uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage (Fla. Stat. § 627.727) is often what actually pays for a serious injury. Bring us your declarations page and we will tell you what you have.

Questions people ask us about car accident cases

Who investigates a car accident inside Port Richey city limits?

The Port Richey Police Department, at 6333 Ridge Road, handles crashes inside the incorporated city. Most serious crashes on US-19, and most crashes in unincorporated Jasmine Estates and Embassy Hills, are worked by the Florida Highway Patrol (Troop C) or the Pasco Sheriff's Office. If you are not sure who responded, call (240) 421-5511 and we will track it down.

How do I get my Port Richey crash report?

Through the Florida Crash Portal at services.flhsmv.gov, for $10 plus a $2 convenience fee. Reports can take up to 10 days to appear, and the emailed download link expires after 48 hours. For the first 60 days, Fla. Stat. § 316.066(2) limits access to the people involved, their attorneys and insurers. We pull the report for every client.

Which hospital will I be taken to after a crash near Ridge Road?

Serious injuries usually go to HCA Florida Bayonet Point Hospital at 14000 Fivay Road in Hudson, the only Level II trauma center in Pasco County. Less severe injuries often go to Morton Plant North Bay Hospital in New Port Richey. Our office is minutes from Bayonet Point, and we meet clients at either hospital or at home.

How long do I have to file an injury claim after a Port Richey accident?

Two years from the date of the crash for most negligence claims under Fla. Stat. § 95.11(5)(a), and two years for wrongful death under § 95.11(5)(e). Crashes before March 24, 2023 keep the older four-year period. Evidence like business camera footage along US-19 disappears much sooner than that, so call early.

What if the driver who hit me on US-19 had no bodily injury coverage?

Florida requires only $10,000 in PIP and $10,000 in property damage liability to register a car; bodily injury liability is optional for most private vehicles. If the at-fault driver has no BI coverage, your own uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage under Fla. Stat. § 627.727 may be the main source of recovery beyond PIP. We review every policy in your household.
