Twenty years ago, SR-54 east of the Suncoast Parkway ran through pasture. Today it runs through Wesley Chapel, one of the fastest-growing communities in Florida, and SR-52 is being rebuilt to carry a county that has grown by more than 100,000 people since 2020. Growth is good for Pasco. It is also hard on its roads and on the people who drive them.

This post lays out the growth numbers, what is known about crashes on the two corridors, and what to do if you were hurt on one.

How fast central and east Pasco have grown

The numbers come from the U.S. Census Bureau unless noted.

  • Pasco County: 561,891 at the 2020 Census, 674,516 by the July 1, 2025 estimate. That is 20 percent growth in five years. Bay News 9 reported in October 2025 that the Pasco Chamber described growth of more than 15 percent in five years, and Pasco was named among Florida's fastest-growing communities.
  • Wesley Chapel CDP: 5,691 people in 2000, 44,092 in 2010, 64,866 in 2020. That is 47 percent growth between 2010 and 2020, and more than tenfold since 2000.
  • Land O' Lakes CDP: 31,996 in 2010, 35,929 in 2020.
  • Zephyrhills: just under 20,000 in the 2025 estimate, up from roughly 17,000 five years earlier, according to the Pasco Chamber as reported by Bay News 9.

Almost all of that growth sits along SR-54, SR-56, SR-52, US-41, Bruce B. Downs Boulevard and I-75. The roads were widened in stretches. The population came faster.

SR-54: the spine of central Pasco

SR-54 runs about 38 miles across the county, from US-19 in Elfers east through Trinity, past Little Road, across the Suncoast Parkway, through Land O' Lakes at US-41, under I-75 at Wesley Chapel, and on to US-301 in downtown Zephyrhills. West of I-75 it is a six-lane divided highway. East of Curley Road it narrows to two undivided lanes for the rest of the run to Zephyrhills.

That eastern stretch is the one FDOT is studying now. The department's District 7 project page for SR-54 from Curley Road to Morris Bridge Road describes widening or rebuilding about 4.5 miles of two-lane rural road into a four-lane divided arterial with sidewalks, trails, shoulders or bike lanes, to provide what FDOT calls a higher-capacity and safer facility for a rapidly developing part of the county. SR-54 is also a designated hurricane evacuation route.

Until that work is done, drivers leaving the six-lane section near Wesley Chapel hit a two-lane road with driveways, farm traffic and new subdivisions coming online every month.

SR-52: the corridor FDOT rebuilt

SR-52 crosses Pasco farther north, from US-19 in Bayonet Point past Moon Lake Road and the Suncoast Parkway, through Land O' Lakes at US-41, under I-75, and east toward San Antonio and Dade City.

In February 2023, Laker/Lutz News reported that FDOT opened a new alignment of SR-52 in east Pasco from Uradco Place, east of I-75, to US-301, initially with one lane in each direction divided by a median, with additional lanes to follow later that year. The realignment moved through-traffic off the old route and onto a road built for the growth that is coming.

The Pasco Metropolitan Planning Organization has separately identified SR-52 near Land O' Lakes as one of the corridors where traffic deaths cluster, along with US-19, US-301, US-98, I-75 and Little Road, according to Laker/Lutz News coverage of the MPO's safety work.

What the crash data shows for Pasco

Corridor-specific crash counts for SR-54 and SR-52 are available through FLHSMV's Signal Four Analytics system, and we pull them for individual cases. The countywide picture is clear enough on its own.

  • According to Pasco MPO figures reported by Laker/Lutz News, Pasco averaged 102.8 traffic deaths and 910.6 serious injuries per year from 2018 to 2022, a fatality rate of 1.99 per 100 million vehicle miles traveled compared with 1.54 statewide.
  • The MPO's breakdown of 2022 crashes, also reported by Laker/Lutz News, counted 4,486 intersection crashes with 308 serious injuries and 33 deaths, and 3,246 lane-departure crashes with 236 serious injuries and 45 deaths. Lane departures are a two-lane-road problem, and east SR-54 and old SR-52 are two-lane roads.
  • A March 2024 study by Jason Stone Injury Lawyers, reported by Tampa Bay 28, ranked Pasco's intersections ninth deadliest in the nation and named SR-54 and Madison Street among the worst, alongside two US-19 intersections. It is a law-firm study, so treat the ranking with care.
  • According to FLHSMV Crash Dashboard figures reported by Neighborhood News in November 2025, Pasco recorded 5,866 crashes from January 1 through November 14, 2025, including 68 with fatalities, 3,173 with injuries and 1,107 hit-and-runs. The same column counted 19 major FHP-reported crashes in the Wesley Chapel area over roughly eight months.

What growth means for your claim

More commercial traffic means more truck cases

Every new subdivision on SR-54 brings dump trucks, concrete mixers, lumber deliveries and moving vans. Crashes with commercial vehicles involve different insurance, federal regulations and evidence that disappears fast: driver logs, dash camera footage, electronic control module data. Our truck accident page explains how those cases differ.

Out-of-area insurers and out-of-area drivers

Wesley Chapel's growth brings drivers from everywhere, including drivers who moved from states that require bodily injury liability coverage and did not realize Florida does not. FLHSMV requires only $10,000 in PIP and $10,000 in property damage liability. If the driver who hit you on SR-54 has no bodily injury coverage, your own uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage under Fla. Stat. § 627.727 is where the claim goes. Why UM matters.

Fault gets argued hard on crowded roads

Left turns across SR-54 at Collier Parkway, merges at the I-75 ramps, lane changes near Bruce B. Downs Boulevard: multi-vehicle crashes in heavy traffic produce competing stories. Under Florida's 51% rule in Fla. Stat. § 768.81(6), a driver found more than 50 percent at fault recovers nothing. The evidence you gather in the first days decides which story the adjuster believes. How the 51% rule works.

The deadlines do not stretch with the county

Get medical care within 14 days to preserve PIP under Fla. Stat. § 627.736. File any negligence suit within two years of the crash under Fla. Stat. § 95.11(5)(a). If a GOPasco bus, a county vehicle or a school bus was involved, Fla. Stat. § 768.28 adds a notice requirement and caps recovery at $200,000 per person.

  2. Get seen at AdventHealth Wesley Chapel, AdventHealth Zephyrhills, BayCare Wesley Chapel or your own doctor within 14 days.

Questions people ask us about sr-54 and sr-52 crashes as wesley chapel and land o' lakes grow cases

Who investigates crashes on SR-54 and SR-52?

Wesley Chapel and Land O' Lakes are unincorporated, so crashes there are investigated by the Florida Highway Patrol or the Pasco Sheriff's Office. The Sheriff's Office says FHP handles most Pasco crash investigations, and that is especially true on state roads like SR-54, SR-52, I-75 and US-41. Inside Zephyrhills or Dade City city limits, the city police respond. Reports are available through the Florida Crash Portal.

Where do I go for treatment after a crash in central or east Pasco?

AdventHealth Wesley Chapel on Bruce B. Downs Boulevard, AdventHealth Zephyrhills on Gall Boulevard, AdventHealth Dade City on Fort King Road, and BayCare Hospital Wesley Chapel all serve the area. For major trauma, HCA Florida Bayonet Point in Hudson is Pasco's trauma center, and Tampa's Level I centers are just south on I-75. Get seen within 14 days to protect your PIP benefits under Fla. Stat. § 627.736.

Does it matter that SR-54 is a state road if I want to sue?

Your claim is almost always against the driver who hit you, not the road owner. In the rare case where a road defect such as a broken signal caused the crash, a claim against FDOT or Pasco County falls under Fla. Stat. § 768.28, with a written notice requirement, a $200,000 per person cap and immunity for many planning decisions. We evaluate every possible defendant.

I was hit by a dump truck in a construction zone on SR-54. Is that a truck case?

Yes. Construction and delivery traffic on SR-54 and SR-52 means many crashes involve commercial vehicles. Those cases bring in federal motor carrier rules, employer liability and larger insurance policies, and the evidence, such as electronic logs and dash cameras, has to be preserved quickly. See our truck accident page or call us the same day.
